TREADLE / PEDAL PUMP
Features
- The
discharge of water ranges within 5000 to 7000 liters per hour.
-
The pump is easy to install, requires little maintenance and can easily
be repaired by the farmer. Moreover, Ajay has trained local mechanics
to ensure good after sales service.
-
Minimal operating costs, as it requires no fuel or electricity.
-
The Ajay Treadle pumps effectively irrigate land holdings that are 0.5
hectares in size.
-
Ajay Treadle pump is best suited to water level less than 15 to 20 feet
below ground level. Its use is recommended to lift water from ground
or surface water rivers, ponds, streams, canals, wells etc.
-
Ajay Treadle pump is one of the cheapest irrigation systems currently
available.

Treadle pump is a foot operated, two-cylinder pump and uses treadles
to engage both the operator's legs and full body weight. It can be used
to lift water from bore wells, canals, ponds, streams etc., and it is
designated to irrigate small area of crops. The pump is human powered
to eliminate the fuel and oil costs associated with motorized pumps,
and reduces the crop damage and income losses associated with mechanical
breakdowns and interruption of the fuel supply. The Treadle pump is
simple and efficient. It can pump 5000 - 7000 liters (5-7 m³) of water
per hour. If the pump is properly adjusted and maintained, the pump
can be operated several hours a day without tiring the workers. The
leg muscles, which are the most powerful of the human body, provide
the power to drive the pump. In addition, the pump is operated in a
natural way, as walking. With four hours of pumping per day, depending
upon soil permeability and the water needs of the particular crop, the
pump can irrigate up to 0.5 hectares of land in dry season.
The
Treadle pump can raise water by suction and by pressure, just like a
motorized centrifugal pump. It can raise water from a well when the
water level is seven meters below ground level. It can also pump water
through a distribution pipe. The pump can be by one or two adults or
up to four children. The total vertical distance the water can be pumped
is limited by the total weight of the pump operators. Two adults weighing
a total of 100kgs can pump water up to 10 meters vertically. One adult
weighing 50 Kg can lift water up to 5 meters only. If the pipe used
with the pump is two smaller the pump is not maintained and adjusted
properly, the pump will not be able to lift water this high and the
work is likely to be tiring.
Principle
of operation
Essentially
the pump has four parts:
1.
A metal pump body having two identical cylinders of sheet metal.
2.
Two piston rods
3.
Valve box
4.
Treadles
Pump
cylinder: The cylinders of the Treadle pump are made from mild steel
sheet, which is rolled around and is subsequently arc welded, while
the mandrel remains inside the cylinder. This method produces cylinders,
perfectly round, smoother and lighter. The first part of the pump body
is the valve plate, which is the top of the valve box to which the cylinders
are welded. The cylinders are placed on the valve box in a position
that is offset to the layout of the valve portholes. This is done to
provide room inside the cylinders for seating of the inlet valves. The
whole body and other metal parts hot dip galvanized to minimize the
effect of rusting on the metal parts as these parts are always in contact
with water.
Pistons:
The pistons of the Treadle pump consists of two nitrile rubber cups,
sandwiched between a pair of steel washers, all of which are held together
by a nut and bolt welded to the end of the piston rod. A third steel
washer of a larger diameter is placed between the two-nitrile cups.
The upper pump cup faces towards the top cylinder. It seals the piston
when the pump is acting on the suction stroke, when the pump is moving
upwards. The lower cup faces towards the bottom of the cylinder. It
seals the piston when pump is acting on the pressure stroke, when the
piston is moving downward, because the nitrile cups are flexible, they
expand against the cylinder as a result of atmospheric pressure (for
the upper cup), and the pressure of the water inside the cylinder (for
the lower cup), thereby sealing the piston.
Valves:
Four valves are used in the Treadle pump: one intake and one outlet
in each cylinder. Making these valves is simplified because they are
identical. Each valve consists of two parts: -
-
A
rubber valve flap
-
A
metal clamping bar
Each
valve is attached to the pump body with two bolts, which clamp both
inlet and outlet valve flaps in each cylinder. All of the valves are
simple check valves, opening and closing in response to the water pressure
acting upon them. The outlet valves open away from the cylinder and
lets water out of the cylinder when the piston is moving downwards.
The inlet valve opens in to the cylinder and lets water in to the cylinder
when the piston moves upwards. The two inlet valves draw water from
the inlet chamber of the valve box that connects with the intake pipe.
The two outlet valves discharge water into the outlet chamber, connected
to the outlet pipe of the pump. Treadles Treadles and baseboard is made
of good quality of hard wood, as it will last much longer against the
effects of frictional wear, water and sun light. The treadles are 1600mm
long and have sufficient holes so that nylon ropes passes through for
easy working of piston rods. Baseboard is used for mounting the pump
body and which forms bottom of the valve box.
Pedaling
to prosperity
-
For
millions of farmers the Treadle pump can bring a sea change to their
lives.
-
It
gives them ownership of water crucial for a successful harvest.
-
It
is more efficient, more affordable and most appropriate to their needs.
-
It
provides an assured access to water, freeing farmers from vagaries
of nature or erratic electric and diesel supply.
-
The
farmer increases his earnings by 100-400% in less than 6 months.
-
The
farmer recovers his initial investment in one growing season.
-
The
farmer can thus time his/her crop to fetch the best price.
